We are like islands in the sea,
separate on the surface,
but connected in the deep.
- William James
In the context of the exhibition "Isola Alicudi" initiated by Nikita Kotliar at Westwerk Hamburg, each of the 12 artists deals with the impressions and experiences he gained during his stay on the remote island of Alicudi, near Sicily.
For 12 Ansichten einer Insel, the artists are invited to answer questions about the structure of the island, their real and imaginary experiences and wishes regarding it, and to draw the cartographic outline from memory. The answers and outline drawings form the basis for the translation of information into an encoded ornamental sign language, which is notated on 12 maps.
The work thus takes a meta-perspective and summarizes the individual impressions. Depending on the observer's point of view, the individual maps represent separate islands, but also overlap through the transparent substrate to form an overall picture, a collage of mapped sensations.
